UGC CPM Calculator

Short answer

UGC CPM is what you paid a creator per 1,000 views: (amount paid ÷ views) × 1,000. Paying $400 for a video that gets 250,000 views is a $1.60 CPM. Typical mainstream rates are ~$1–$5 on TikTok, ~$3–$10 on YouTube Shorts, and ~$5–$12 on Instagram Reels.

The UGC CPM formula

CPM means cost per mille — cost per 1,000 views. For creator content it answers one question: how much did each 1,000 views of this content cost you?

Effective CPM = (amount paid ÷ views) × 1,000

Example: ($400 ÷ 250,000) × 1,000 = $1.60. Across a campaign: $5,000 for 1,800,000 views ≈ $2.78.

Use the total you paid for the content: the base fee, any view bonuses, and extras such as usage rights or whitelisting. Use the views that payment covered — one video, all of a creator's videos this month, or a whole campaign. The calculator's Cost at a CPM mode runs the formula backwards: cost = views ÷ 1,000 × CPM rate, which is what a pay-per-view creator is owed.

UGC CPM benchmarks by platform

The calculator compares your number with these mainstream pay-per-view ranges:

PlatformTypical CPM (per 1,000 views)Notes
TikTok~$1–$5 (up to ~$8 on full performance deals)Lowest per-view band; often a base fee plus per-view
YouTube Shorts~$3–$10 (premium niches far higher)Priced ~$0.003–$0.01 per view for mainstream audiences
Instagram Reels~$5–$12 ($5–$20 effective)Highest band; IG audiences skew higher-value

They're industry-consensus ranges for 2025–2026, not audited data — a sanity check rather than a quote. Niche, usage rights, exclusivity, and audience location all move the rate; the UGC CPM guide covers what pushes it up or down.

How to read your CPM

  • Below the range: Efficient spend. Often a flat-fee video that outperformed. Check the views are real and the audience matches who you sell to.
  • Inside the range: A market rate for mainstream content. Compare creators with each other to decide who to renew.
  • Above the range: Expected for finance, B2B, or health audiences and for deals with usage rights. Otherwise, renegotiate or move budget to cheaper creators.

A single CPM is a snapshot. Views keep growing for days after a post goes up, so a CPM worked out on day two looks worse than the same video's CPM on day ten. Compare creators at the same age of post, or recalculate once the views settle.

Track CPM for every creator, automatically

Working out CPM once is easy. Keeping it current for 20 creators on three platforms means re-copying view counts every week. Viralytics tracks every post on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, refreshes the views, and shows effective CPM per creator and per platform next to what each creator is owed.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate CPM for UGC?

Divide what you paid by the views the content got, then multiply by 1,000: CPM = (amount paid ÷ views) × 1,000. A $400 fee for a video with 250,000 views is ($400 ÷ 250,000) × 1,000 = $1.60 CPM. Include everything you paid for the content — the fee, any bonuses, and usage rights — so the number reflects your real cost.

What is a good CPM for UGC?

For mainstream pay-per-view UGC, a typical CPM is roughly $1–$5 on TikTok, $3–$10 on YouTube Shorts, and $5–$12 on Instagram Reels. Premium niches such as finance and B2B can run several times higher. A CPM below the range is efficient; one above it is normal when the deal includes usage rights or a specialist audience.

What is effective CPM?

Effective CPM is what you actually paid per 1,000 views, however the creator was paid. It turns a flat fee, a per-view rate, or a base + bonus deal into one number, so you can compare creators on different deals with each other.

Should I calculate CPM per video or per creator?

Both. Per-video CPM shows which content worked; per-creator CPM — total paid to a creator divided by all their views — shows who is worth renewing. A blended CPM across a whole campaign tells you what your reach cost overall.

Is this the same CPM as TikTok or Meta ads?

No. Ad-platform CPM is what you pay the platform per 1,000 ad impressions. UGC CPM is what you pay a creator per 1,000 organic views of their post. The two are often compared when deciding between boosting content and paying creators, but they measure different things.

How do I track CPM for every creator automatically?

A UGC tracking tool such as Viralytics pulls each creator's posts and live view counts from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube and divides what you paid by those views, so effective CPM per creator and per platform stays current without a spreadsheet.
